Dog Adoption Campaign
Introduction
Community Service Initiative is a form of service learning subject initiated by the ministry of education by using curriculum to help foster a sense of care and concern among students for their community and the world at large. Ultimately, in the end of this module, the subject is to help in developing students’ personal and social responsibility. Through this module, students’ are to be able to expose to community needs and experience caring for others and learning about the resources available to them for revitalizing their communities. It is also an opportunity for student to be able to use their skills and knowledge in the real-life situation.
In this project, students are given a choice to choose either involve in a project that is collaborating with the Persatuan Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Klang Selangor (PPKKCK) or another with the Lost Animal Soul Shelter (LASS). I have chosen to join the project collaborating with the LASS.
Tasks
Under this project, we are given the task for a Dog Adoption Campaign. The goal of the campaign is to increase the rate of shelter pet adoption by raising the awareness and to show the people that shelter pets are loving, well-adjusted animals who are homeless through no fault of their own. This project is a 4-step-movement with a long lasting impact for the community, shelter, and the dogs. Our hope is that the campaign will be able to encourage potential pet lovers to prefer adopt as a first choice and desired way for acquiring companion animals.
The first step is rebranding. We will be producing monthly cover photos for Facebook page and constantly updating information about the campaign. The second step is to design a series of postcards by using photographs of the dog in the shelter with profiles of each dogs. The third step is to display the dogs from the shelters that are available to be adopted; postcards with the profile of the dog are to be given to the pet lovers who are interested for adopting the dogs as a souvenir. The last step is to bring some of the available dogs to the Desa Park City and allow them to engage with the community to attract more interest. Postcards with the profile of the dogs will also be given to them who are interested for the dog adoption. Both third and fourth steps are to be recorded and produced into a video.
Before the beginning of the project, we are given some workshops where we are to visits the dog shelter and engage with the dogs for 2 weekends. From there, we were able to bond and form relationship with the dogs by cleaning the shelter and bathing the dogs.
In the project, all four steps’ job scopes are to be divided into four groups, each taking part in one step. I have chosen to be in the last step, which is to bring the dogs to the Desa Park City to allow them to engage to the public. Even though I do not have the experience with pets, I would like to use this opportunity to let myself engage with the pets and let myself to be out of my comfort zone by trying things that are totally new to me. During the 4 days of spending time in the Desa Park City with the dogs, creating awareness to the public, I am able to learn and constantly developing myself on communicating skills while approaching the public and to convince them to spend time listening to what we want to say to them. I have also develop a strong sense of social responsibility and learn the importance of teamwork while working in a group. Finally, I have also improve myself more in self and time management skills and strengthen my lifelong academic leaning.
